Alabama Top Haunt: Insanitarium
Are you insane enough?
Kicking off our 2017 favorite haunts is none other than Pinson, Alabama’s award-winning INSANITARIUM. You’ll visit the lair of the demented Dr. Ausnemen, the mad scientist whose evil undead still lurk the grounds. But rumor has it the deranged doctor has also created a machine which allows INSANITARIUM’s victims..er, visitors to witness creatures only seen in nightmares. INSANITARIUM promises to step up the scares each and every year to deliver the ultimate fright fest for the whole family (although parents are advised the attraction may be more appropriate for those 13 and up).
INSANITARIUM is also updated and redesigned every year so returning guests will always get a new spook. Rain check? No need. INSANITARIUM offers covered waiting areas with availability to snacks and refreshments to boot. INSANITARIUM also supports their local arts by working closely with Pinson Valley Effects, PVFX, a special effects group geared to offering young artists real-world experience in costuming, prop making and set design. So come on down, the doctor is in!
Alaska Top Haunt: Fright Night Manor
Anchorage’s Oldest Haunted House
For the second year in a row, Anchorage’s own Fright Nite Manor comes in as Alaska’s top haunt. Fright Nite Manor was founded in 1985 and currently stands as the longest running haunted house in Anchorage bringing fun and fear to the entire family for more than three decades! The terrifying “Manor” is located in the Northway Mall, a 10,000 sq. foot space filled to the brim with ghastly sights.
The attraction also includes 3D glasses with every $15.00 ticket so you won’t miss a single moment of their immersive 3D effects. While the attraction does veer in the direction of being a completely family friendly haunt, it may not be advised for very young children. Fright Nite Manor is a wheelchair accessible establishment that is sure to bring you back year after year!

Arizona Top Haunt: Sanctum of Horror
Will You Survive the Mad Mind of Lenore?
For the past 5 years, Sanctum of Horror has been striking fear into the hearts of haunt lovers from near and far. Moving up the ranks from the second spot on our list in 2016, this attraction is sure to get your blood pumping. When you enter you’ll be introduced to the notoriously twisted mind of Lenore, a violently disturbed little girl. As you walk through a maze of macabre surroundings you’ll be witness to her terrifying past.
Sanctum of Horror has already announced that they’ll be unveiling new room layouts this haunt season so returning guests will get to experience all new scenes! In addition to the Sanctum, guest will get to experience their more recent addition, “The Breach”. Frightened fans of the Sanctum of Horror rave about their amazing special effects, self-described “larger than life” animatronics and incredible acting. This award-winning haunt is considered “Very Scary” according to an Arizona haunted attraction guide and is most appropriate for ages 10 and up. Its location at the Superstition Springs Mall (in the Sears parking lot) will give you the added benefit of abundant and free parking.

Arkansas Top Haunt: Carpenter’s Mortuary
A Haunted House in an Actual Mortuary
Moving up from our 2016 Runner Up list to take the number one spot this year is Carpenter’s Mortuary, one of the only haunted houses in the US located in an actual, eighty-eight-year-old mortuary. As you make your way down the horrifying halls of the Spook House, you’ll come face to face with the murderous morticians and ghastly gravediggers that still reside in Mother Carpenter’s mortuary and children’s home of horrors. Yep. You read that right. A mortuary and children’s home occupying the same space; what could go wrong? Well, with an embezzling, murderous “Mother” in charge, a lot apparently.
This haunt is scary, so scary in fact that it’s recommended that you pass this one by if you suffer from certain medical conditions. (Check out their “Warnings” page on their site for more info.) Otherwise, this attraction is recommended for those 13 and up and the entire attraction is located indoors so it will operate rain or shine! In addition to frights, this is a haunt with a heart. Carpenter’s Mortuary has previously partnered with Vet Tix to provide free tickets for veterans on opening weekend. For that, we salute them.

California Top Haunt: The Haunted Hotel
Stay a night, or forever.
San Diego’s Haunted Hotel will scare you to your core. With nothing but a glow stick to light your way, you’ll start your evening by plunging into the depths on the Hellevator. Next, you’ll be forced to make your way through zombie-infested alleyways where the only option to escape the streets unscathed will be to survive a ride on the Clown Subway (named best haunted room in America). If you survive the insanity, you can try to make your way through the murky Hillbilly Swamp, but beware of the man hunting killers that have other plans in mind!
The Haunted Hotel is celebrating their 25th year and is the longest running haunted attraction in San Diego. It’s been featured on The Travel Channel’s “America Haunts IV” and has been selected as one of the top 13 haunted houses in America by Haunt World Magazine. With hundreds of reviews and thousands of visitors annually, this is one haunt that should be on your list!
Colorado Top Haunt: Haunted Field of Screams
30 Acres of Fright!
Coming in to take the top spot for Colorado is Thornton, CO’s Haunted Field of Screams. Covering 30 acres and offering three unique experiences all in one convenient location makes this Colorado’s largest haunted attraction. With only the moon to guide you, you’ll have to make your way through looming cornstalks and eerie encounters with unseen inhabitants. Your wits may be put to the test on themed scenes that lay before you.
If you survive, will you have what it takes to make it through the Dead Man’s Night Maze? A daunting maze filled with terrifying creatures who share one goal – to keep you trapped forever! Should you prove your merit, you’ll join other survivors in an effort to reach the zombie patrol outpost and put your paintball skills to the test during the Zombie Paintball Massacre! Connecticut Top Haunt: Legends of Fear
The Legends are true…and they want to get to know you too!
Claiming Connecticut’s number one slot this year is none other than Legends of Fear. For the past 21 years, the talented folks at Fairview Tree Farm have been transforming their land into the ultimate scare fest! Located on an actual farm with acres of land to explore, visitors will have access to The Hallow which features four separate attractions, including the Melon Head Revenge Trail, Pine Hills Parish, and The Dark harvest, as well as an all-new 2017 addition, Hemlock Manor Mortuary. Should you make it out alive, maybe take a trip on the Haunted Hayride, celebrating its 21st year of total fear!
Despite this being a family farm, certain features may not be appropriate for your entire family. (No one under the age of 12 is permitted on the Melon Head Revenge Trail.) Guests will have to brave a multitude of monsters, including cannibalistic creatures, deranged parishioners, vile vampires and more if they want to survive the night. Parking is free with parking attendants on duty to assist anyone with special needs. Comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended due to the mostly outdoor locations. Delaware Top Haunt: Screams at the Beach

Screams at the Beach isn’t just a spooky name, it’s what they plan to make you do! And for their seventh year running, they’ve opened three brand new additions for 2017! Now featuring 9 main attractions, Screams at the Beach will test your bravery, offering a wide variety of spooky scenes to satisfy even the most fearless among you. Explore the escape rooms that force you face to face with your phobias while solving puzzles and racing the clock. But be warned, you don’t want to be left behind when time runs out! In addition to mind-bending puzzles in the escape rooms, guest will get to explore the rest of their award-winning establishment, including haunted trails, mazes, zombie paintball (with a required Zombie Hunting Permit, of course) and more! Florida Top Haunt: The Shallow Grave
Two scary attractions, one not-so-scary price!
Established in 2013, The Shallow Grave became Central Florida’s ONLY Nationally Ranked Haunted House and within only 3 years has risen to fright-filled acclaim, even making USA Today’s 10 Best of 2016. This year they’ve upped the ante once again, now offering two terrifying attractions for the price of one! With nearly 13,000 sq feet to explore, The Shallow Grave will proudly present their all-new feature for 2017, “Betrayal”. If you’ve had the opportunity to visit this renowned haunt before then you’ve already been introduced to Florida’s favorite cemetery caretaker turned cannibal, Thaddeus Van Buren. But rumor has it there’s some family drama boiling up to the surface and a new Van Buren who’s looking for trouble. Will you survive this deranged family reunion?
Also returning in 2017, Pavor Nocturnus, a stomach-churning haunt that promises to creep into the darkest depths of your subconscious. How do you know when a haunt is worth it? Well, when it sits less than 45 minutes from both Busch Garden’s Howl-O-Scream and Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights and STILL earns the title of our number one “fright find” for Florida!
Georgia Top Haunt: Paranoia Haunted House
The Devil went down to Georgia, and Paranoia Haunted House scared him back.
The 2017 haunt season wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Georgia, purportedly one of the most haunted states in the US. If you’re feeling rather brave, make the drive and double down on your fears to check out our top pick, Paranoia Haunted House in Canton. New for 2017 is Experiment X, where visitors will join a team on a reconnaissance mission to scour the property for the elusive and deranged Dr. Tobias Warner. Beware though; Dr. Warner’s ghoulish experiments may still lurk the property.
If you don’t need a change of underwear after that, you can make your way to the Slaughter Shack, where you’ll learn urban legends aren’t always just the stuff of stories. Paranoia Haunted House maintains a solid 4.5-star rating with hundreds of reviews, and 5-star ratings are already pouring in for the 2017 season. Be there or beware!
Hawaii Top Haunt: Haunted Plantation
Terror in Paradise
Coming in at number one for the THIRD year in a row is Waipahu’s own Haunted Plantation and for good reason; this attraction is supposedly located in an actual haunted village. Over 60 unique actors and masterful special effects have cemented this Haunted Plantation as a destination haunt worth visiting and a staple of holiday horror for area residents.
Haunted Plantation has been featured on Syfy, Travel Channel and Buzzfeed and voted one of the top Haunts in the nation. This year’s theme is Apparitions, and currently their Facebook page is being updated regularly with spine-tingling teasers that give only a small taste of what’s in store. Guests should be warned this isn’t an attraction for small children or those with heart or breathing conditions, so plan your visit accordingly.

Idaho Top Haunt: Requiem Haunted House
Requiem for a Nightmare
Securing the top spot for Idaho this year is Requiem Haunted House. Requiem is a member of the Haunted Attraction Association, the official association of the haunted house industry and a top rated haunted house for the state of Idaho for the past 2 years. It is the newest and largest indoor haunt in Treasure Valley and offers more than 7,000 sq feet of fright-filled fun. There are two price tiers for admission with special prices for children under 12 so this attraction offers a scary good time no matter your budget.
If you’re also looking to make a real world difference, Requiem is offering two nights on their calendar this season where a portion of the ticket price will go to the anti-bullying organization Don’t Be a Monster (Saturday, October 7th) and the Caldwell Fire Department (Friday, October 20th) for their Fire Stairclimb fundraiser to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Go get scared to show you care!

The experience begins from the moment you step out of your car and intensifies the closer you get to the attractions. Kansas Top Haunt: Field of Screams

The top haunt in all of Kansas, Field of Screams is on the site of the infamous “vigilante murders;” the Spurlock family farm in rural Maize, Kansas. Traverse through Jebediah’s Field, then find yourself locked inside Jeb’s Escape Shack where once inside the padlocked cabin, you have only 15 minutes to solve the puzzles to earn your escape. Take a stroll through Clown Town 3D with its mind-bending mazes and disorienting obstacles, and just maybe you’ll make it out alive!

Kentucky’s longest continuous running haunted attraction, The Haunted Hotel, is the top haunt for the state of Kentucky. The Haunted Hotel opened in 1991 and is dubbed one of the most extreme and physical haunts in the United States. Guests can count on being accosted by creepy hotel employees and may hear disturbing dialogue inside of this horror house. You may check-in at The Haunted Hotel, but you will never CHECK OUT!!

Of all of the historical haunted houses in Louisiana, The House of Shock was voted this year’s top haunt! The haunted festival features three world-class attractions: Laff in the Dark, an “all-out 3D clown assault,” The House of Shock, and new for 2017, House of Wax, a tribute to Museé Conti. House of Wax takes you through the dark and twisted history of New Orleans, including a visit with Mad Madame Lalaurie and The Myrtles! The next attraction on our list is none other than Lebanon, ME’s Destination Haunt. The self-guided walk will wind you through a macabre array of horrific sights, from the dreaded Hobo Village to the Buried Alive Cemetery and more, including this year’s latest addition, The Clownhouse! Appropriate footwear and dress is recommended as this attraction has many outdoor areas. Destination Haunt will be sure to whet your appetite for fear, but if you’re feeling famished after the walkthrough they’ll also be sure to hook you up with an array of new items available at their Snack Shack. Not recommended for anyone under 7 so keep that in mind when making plans.
Maryland Top Haunt: Laurel’s House of Horror

2017 marks the fourth year for an attraction rated DC and Maryland’s scariest, Laurel’s House of Horror. This attraction is not only open during the regular haunt season from September to November, but also offers a special “Halfway to Halloween” event on select dates in April and May. There are over 28,000 sq feet of building practically dripping with dread. Guests will have to make their way through the various monstrous inhabitants that dwell within – creatures designed to overload your senses and prey on your phobias.
In addition to the holiday haunt, the attraction doubles as space for four chilling and challenging escape rooms that operate year round. You’ll be plunged into interactive iconic scenes from your favorite horror films (try not to be the one that gets separated from your group though!), challenge rooms where your group is split into two as you race against the clock to be the first to emerge unscathed and more. This Halloween season sees an all-new interactive addition inside the bowels of this ramshackle 1940’s asylum, Zombie Attack. Forget paintball and laser tag, you and a team of friends will take on weighted, metal body replicas of M4 rifles so you can truly tackle the undead uprising. McCalls Haunted Farm is the top haunt for the state of New Mexico! Deceased Farms promises to bring the scares in 2017, introducing guests to their deepest, darkest fears. Visitors will experience a continuous self-guided haunt that spans 6 buildings of chaos, beginning with a trippy 3D experience that will leave your head spinning. After that, guests will make their way through a dreary farm and onto 2 acres of expansive cornfields.
It’s almost harvesting time, so make sure you’re not caught out alone! West Virginia Top Haunt: The Asylum Haunted House Presents DEVIANT

The folks over at the Asylum certainly know how to put on a show. For the third year in a row, they have stolen the number one spot as West Virginia’s Top Haunt, following their presentations of “Malice” in 2015 and “Hysteria” in 2016. This year prepare to be driven mad by “Deviant”, a terrifying glimpse into the sadistic mind of Dr. Cerebus and his mutilated experiments.
Located in one of the US’s oldest and most terrifying asylums from the 1800’s – the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum – this is a haunt with a lot of history. Like most of the others on this list, children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and it isn’t recommended for expecting mothers or those with heart conditions. All others should proceed with caution, the doctor is in and he’s accepting new patients!
